An Operating System is the software which interacts with the hardware of a computer system and serves as the intermediary between the installed applications and the hardware, including peripheral devices such as a printer, a mouse or a keyboard. When you run an application, it transfers requests to the OS using an API (Application Program Interface) and the communication is done via a command line or a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Similar to a personal computer, web servers also have an Operating System that functions as a host for the software installed on them, including script applications or server-side software such as a flash server, a VOIP server, etcetera. A virtual machine can be created on a physical one, so you could install a guest OS on it and have a different system environment compared to the physical server host OS.
Multiple OS in VPS
In case you choose to purchase one of our virtual private server packages, you will be able to select one of the three Linux releases which we provide for the Operating System of the servers - CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian. These are among the most widely used and most reliable server OSs out there and we offer them in order to give you a choice for the software environment of your machine if you want to install some app with specific requirements regarding the packages that must be present on the hosting server. We also offer three hosting Control Panels and which one of them you can use will depend on the OS that you have selected. We leave the option to replace the server Operating System open, so if you want to use an application that requires an OS different from the one you have, we can always re-install the VPS. In addition, we can keep the OS up-to-date on a weekly basis by installing all of the security updates that may be available.
Multiple OS in Dedicated Hosting
If you decide to buy one of our dedicated servers, you will find three Operating Systems on the registration page because we want to give you a broader choice for the system environment on the server as different apps can have specific requirements. CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian contain different modules developed by their vast support communities, so you can select each of these OSs and benefit from a reliable and secure Internet hosting service. Based on your decision, you will also have different Control Panels to choose from. Needless to say, we can always change the Operating System in case the one you have selected at first does not meet the requirements of the software that you want to run. We can also upgrade your OS routinely in order to keep it as risk-free as possible through our Managed Services upgrade package.
